Richtermeyer to Chair Management Accountants

The Institute of Management Accountants has named accounting professor Sandra Richtermeyer as the chair of its board of directors for the 2010-2011 fiscal year.

Richtermeyer, who also chairs the Department of Accountancy in the Williams College of Business at Xavier University in Cincinnati, is only the fourth woman ever to hold the position of IMA chair since the organization’s inception in 1919.

Through June 30, 2011, Dr. Richtermeyer will serve as the senior volunteer leader for the organization’s worldwide network of more than 60,000 accounting and finance professionals. Concurrently, she will serve as chair of IMA’s Governance Committee.

“Volunteer leadership is at the heart of IMA and Sandra has demonstrated a long-standing, unwavering passion for the organization and its members. Using her collaborative style of governance, she will be a driving force in IMA’s continued growth and value-focus in the year ahead,” said IMA president and CEO Jeff Thomson.

Richtermeyer’s teaching interests are in the areas of managerial accounting, corporate governance, nonprofit accounting and information systems. Her research interests include technology enablement and enterprise systems, non-profit accounting and professional issues for accountants. She also works actively as a governance consultant and with a variety of professional organizations. She is a frequent speaker on topics such as corporate governance, financial leadership, technology integration and performance measurement. She has authored many articles in academic and practitioner publications.

IMA has always inspired me by the many benefits it offers it members, from the CMA program to the diverse platforms for professional development and networking.”

Richtermeyer previously held several other volunteer roles with the IMA during the past 15 years, including chair of the Planning and Development Committee, chair of the External and Member Relations Committee, chair of the IMA Foundation for Applied Research, member of the ICMA Board of Regents, professor-in-residence, and chair of the National Committee on Students, in addition to multiple leadership positions at the Chapter and Council level.

In addition to IMA, Dr. Richtermeyer has also served on the boards of many nonprofit organizations and technology groups including current service on the United Way of Greater Cincinnati Agency Audit Committee and the Community and Economic Development Committee of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.

She has served several years on the Microsoft Academic Alliance Board and in many volunteer roles with the American Accounting Association. She also currently holds a board position with the Educational Foundation for Women Accountants and she is a graduate of the Leadership Cincinnati USA executive leadership program. She recently joined One Hundred Wise Women, a women’s leadership initiative developed by Deloitte and Touche USA LLP.
