TRAC Report Offers Deeper View of Tax Return Data

Syracuse University's Transactional Records AccessClearinghouse has added an app to its recently released annual report on theIRS that lets users drill down to tax return information across all 50 statesand every one of more than 3,000 counties.

 

For example, Utah County in Utah leads the nation inexemptions claimed per taxpayer in 2008 (the latest figures available), with2.76, while New York County (Manhattan) in New York comes in last with only1.54 exemptions.Loudon County,Va., reported the highest average wages and salaries, at $85,028, while CatronCounty, N.M., reported the lowest at $14,289.

Teton County in Wyoming reported the highest averagegross dividend income, with $11,179, and also topped the list of income earnerswith an average of $142,048 of adjusted gross income.Douglas County, Mo., came in last, reporting an average of$18,262 of AGI.

 

The report also includes a U.S. Tax Code tool.For prosecutions recommended by theIRS, the tool provides a list of the most frequently cited charges thateventually led to formal charges or convictions.It also provides the complete text of each law and mapsshowing where in the country there was a resulting prosecution or conviction.

Since the latest available figures are for tax returnsfiled in 2008, the changes resulting from the current recession are notreflected in the report, which may be accessed on the Syracuse University Website.

 

The TRAC report contains unique views of the datareported on federal income tax returns, showing adjusted gross income, wagesand salaries earned, interest income, dividend income, and exemptions claimed.
